Jao Tsung-I Academy Overview

Jao Tsung-I Academy, located at the former Lai Chi Kok Hospital, is a historic compound selected as one of the projects under the 「Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme」 of the Development Bureau of the HKSAR Government. With the support of the government and community partners, the compound is now revitalized as a center that promotes Chinese culture and facilitates cultural exchange.

Historical Review
The Academy was once a hospital compound perched on a hillside of Lai Chi Kok. Before land reclamation in the Mei Foo and Lai Chi Kok areas, the site had been a seaside customs station at the end of the 19th century. In early 20th century, a British company built living quarters for Chinese laborers on the site. Subsequently, the compound served as a quarantine station, a prison, an infectious disease hospital and a psychiatric rehabilitation center. For more than a century, this place has been shaped by Hong Kong's changing social and medical landscape as well as the territory's evolving relationship with mainland China and foreign countries. Today, this place takes on a brand new role. With the opening of the Academy, the compound answers our community's need for a new cultural platform.
