【Touch Arts Feature】It’s the annual International Museum Day again! Thousands and thousands of government-run and privately-owned museums in over a hundred countries participate in this International Museum Day programme and offer a variety of special programmes, free visits or museum nights for the public to enjoy. Whether you are now in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, or in US, Canada or Europe, etc., you may find museums nearby and experience their special International Museum Day programmes.
Since 1977, the International Council of Museums has assigned May 18 as the International Museum Day. The exact days to celebrate the International Museum Day may slightly vary between countries / regions. In Hong Kong this year, the 2015 Hong Kong International Museum Day is set on May 16 and 17, so that people in Hong Kong have more time to enjoy museum programmes during the weekend. Touch Arts has created a dedicated page on Hong Kong International Museum Day to suggest selected programmes and itineraries, as well as organising all related events and classes into user friendly lists.
The theme for this year’s International Museum Day is “Museums for a sustainable society”. Natural resources are limited and museums play a major role in fostering new concepts and ways of living to promote social developments that encourage green living. Hence many special programmes this year included elements of green culture and visitors can experience a blissful journey of art and culture through the various workshops, guided tours and museum nights.
